Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has suggested that Christian Eriksen might only be a few more weeks away from making his return from injury.

Eriksen has been out of action since late January when he was on the receiving end of a heavy tackle from Reading forward Andy Carroll in the FA Cup.

Having been a regular starter alongside Casemiro, the Dane has missed 13 games in all competitions – that run has included the Carabao Cup final, the Premier League thrashing by Liverpool and both legs of the recent Europa League triumph over Barcelona.

At the time of Eriksen’s injury, it was expected that he would be sidelined for three months and not back in action until the very end of April at the earliest.

But the situation appears to have improved and his recovery timeline has accelerated.

United play Fulham in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday, which Eriksen won’t feature in. But he is now on course to be back on the other side of the March international break.

“I don’t think he will be ready for Sunday, but he will be ready in April,” Ten Hag said.

“He is on his way back, and we are happy about that. He is a class player that we need. I can’t wait for him to be back.”

The United boss will have to reshuffle his midfield even more this weekend. Casemiro begins a four-game domestic suspension following his red card against Southampton and, with Eriksen already missing, there will be an opportunity for Fred, Marcel Sabitzer or Scott McTominay.
