SBTV is relaunching its flagship rap series F64 on the occasion of the channel’s founder’s death anniversary. Jamal passed away at the age of 31 on February 20, 2022, due to a heart attack.

Ed’s freestyle was filmed inside an empty Stamford Bridge as Jamal was a lifelong fan of Chelsea FC.

The Shivers singer got his first break in 2010 through Edwards, when the latter got him to perform his single, You Need Me, I Don’t Need You, on his YouTube. It was this performance of Ed’s that caught the attention of his manager, Stuart Camp, and Atlantic Records.

Ed’s freestyle is extremely touching as it dwells deep into his friendship with Edwards.

    The lyrics go as below:

“Yo Jam, this is a letter to you/ It’s been a while, but it’s been hard for me to get in the booth/ Since we last spoke, I’ve become a father of two/ Trying to live life with a smile but that’s been harder to do/ ‘Cause all I wanna do is talk about you/ But these tears won’t let me talk about you/ We should’ve known that we’d be lost without you”

“Therapy sessions, digging deep in depression / I got a life full of blessings, but this just breaks my f****** heart. People find and stop me in the street and say it’s terrible / But they don’t know you like I knew you and they never will.”

In the above verse, the singer raps about dealing with his best friend’s demise and how it has impacted his life. He also implies his relationship with Edwards was deeper than what people thought it was.

Ed continues: “You would’ve loved loving my little girls / If not for them, I’d be done with the world.”, as he expresses his disappointment about Edwards not getting to meet his second daughter Jupiter, who was born in May 2022. Further along the song, he raps: “You left the world before you met Jupiter”

Looking back at the memories Ed and Edwards made together over the years, the singer raps:

“No one saw the nights turn into day when we were battle rapping/No one saw the belly laugh, and every train to somewhere random/No one saw the holidays, and then our first experience clubbing/No one knew the things you did for me and never asked for nothing/No one read the conversations of the moves that we were planning.”

The singer also addresses Edwards as his brother multiple times throughout the tribute

Born in 1990, Jamal was an entrepreneur, DJ, and the founder of SBTV, who grew up in London. His mother, Brenda, was a contestant on The X Factor.

The Sun reports, he went to Acton High School and held a Diploma in Media Moving Image from Ealing Green College.

He gained prominence through his YouTube channel, where he would post videos of rap with his friends.

Edwards founded SBTV in 2006 to discover new talents. The channel has helped launch the career of several notable musicians, including Ed Sheeran and Jessie J.

He is also reportedly credited with the first online UK-based interview of famed musicians such as Drake and Nicki Minaj.

Ed’s tribute to Jamal in the form of a freestyle has touched fans as they feel it’s “heartbreaking“.

One commented under Ed’s video: “Beautiful tribute, Ed! Of course, I don’t know you personally and didn’t know Jamal personally, but when Jamal passed away, I thought to myself…with Ed’s big heart, he’s going to always make sure Jamal’s family is taken care of and sure enough…you put it in this song.”

“What a wonderful talent you are Ed, I felt your pain through the words. Beautiful way to honor Jamal. RIP,” wrote another.

A third person expressed: “Got me tearing up at work on my lunch break. Beautiful tribute. Condolences to you, Ed Sheeran. It really is tough losing a loved one.”
