Chelsea manager Graham Potter was in top form during a club event on Thursday night, where he quipped that the players will go all out to “try and win the f***ing Champions League!”

The former Brighton boss has been under relentless pressure after an indifferent run of results since his September appointment, although the club look to have turned a corner in recent weeks.

Wins over Leeds United and Leicester City in the Premier League sandwiched a morale-boosting 2-1 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, which sealed the Blues’ place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Potter will lead his side out against struggling Everton on Saturday, where three points could help close the gap on the Premier League’s top six, and could be celebrating four wins in a row by the time the final whistle sounds at Stamford Bridge.

In addition to criticism of performances on the field, the 47-year-old’s demeanour and personality have also been questioned in recent months – with some feeling Potter is too nice in his approach. But an event on Thursday showcased the lighter side of his personality.

Indeed, at a club event, Potter remarked: “Firstly, it’s thank you [to the club’s fans] because they’ve been incredibly fair with us. They’ve stuck with the team, the support we’ve had has been amazing.

“We’ll need them on Saturday, we’ll try to beat Everton. Then we’ll take the draw [for the quarter-final], then we’ll try and win the f****** Champions League!”

Also in attendance was captain Cesar Azpilicueta, who showed confidence of his own by saying: “Whatever we take. I think the other teams should be worried about us more than us being worried about them.”

Chelsea’s potential opponents in the last eight include Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester City – who are yet to win the Champions League and tasted defeat to the Blues in the 2021 final.
