Graham Potter fires warning to Kai Havertz over goal celebration

Chelsea head coach Graham Potter has seemingly criticised forward Kai Havertz for a provocative goal celebration.

The versatile German was on the scoresheet during the Blues’ disappointing 2-2 draw at home to Everton on Saturday evening.

Joao Felix broke the deadlock before the Toffees equalised through Abdoulaye Doucoure. After James Tarkowski fouled Reece James, Havertz put Chelsea back in front from the penalty spot, only for Ellis Simms to snatch a point for Everton at the last.

After Havertz notched Chelsea ahead again, he taunted Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with his celebration – something Potter took umbrage with.

“When players score, they have something like an out-of-body experience,” Potter said post-match.

“I didn’t score many myself so I wouldn’t know. You should enjoy the celebration, I don’t think you need to involve the opponent. That would be my perspective.”

Havertz’s goal on Saturday was his third in as many games after netting in wins against Borussia Dortmund and Leicester City. Prior to that, he had gone eight games without finding the net.

While Chelsea missed the chance to head into the international break off the back of four successive wins, Potter did also stress that there were positives to take from Saturday’s draw.

The Blues return to action on April 1 when Aston Villa visit Stamford Bridge – the two sides are only separated in the Premier League table by goal difference.
